Floral Inspiration

Kirsty Rice

I came across this beautiful print on Pinterest today which led me to Kirsty Rice's website. I have always loved florals and enjoyed drawing flowers for years. Florals was also the main theme for my Graduation Project - Vision de Fleur.

Kirsty is one of the team at Momental Designs creating wedding invitations and much more. Her blog post about this unique design shows the starting point all the way through with her own words on its inspiration and why she started this design. The style of print is soft, with intense use of watercolour that catches the eyes. Overall, the print is flowing with a perfect combination of bursting colour and space.

Being someone who still struggles to draw florals, but loves using soft lines and watercolours, this is truly inspirational to me and a way of drawing I know I want to experiment with. Florals dominate the textile industry every season, are always on the high street and will always sell. And so, for me at least, it is important to combine my love of florals with something the textile industry demands and to succeed in doing it … which, of course, is not easy.

Taking A New Direction

Today, despite how stressful it was, I learnt a lot about how to approach my work ... again an approach I wish I knew this time last year when I had just specialised. Things happen for a reason though and I now know the route myself as a designer has to take throughout the project - A much more, relaxed, sutler and freer one.

I was sent to the library (a lot) today to research photography, fine art, textiles and graphics books and pick out images, marks, colours etc that inspire me. My tutor then made me realised I had picked out a lot of the same watercolour, soft, florals packed images and so that was the style my work would take and I would have to draw from for the next few weeks.

Creating Outside The Comfort Zone

When playing around on Photoshop I always get carried away with layering, colour ways, filters and scale. This, I can guarantee, will lead me to go off and create things that don't entirely work or go together. This exact mistake happened in my Carnival project which became a jumble of colours, patterns and prints that did not work or showcase my theme strong enough. Since then I have been scared to be too daring, as shown in my last self-directed project "Quand a Paris" (When in Paris) last semester.
I want to make this collection stand out and use all the techniques I have learnt throughout my time at University, but having one collection that was not together and one collection that was but not daring enough, has panicked me about "creating outside my comfort zone". I know this is something I cannot be scared about and I just have to go for it as this is the last project so, whilst designing with my drawings in photoshop, I took my French Florals theme down an abstract avenue.

I'm still not 100% sure if this is the avenue I want to go down as they look flat on the screen but will look different on a range of fabrics. But whilst I can I plan on keep surprising myself and stepping outside that comfort zone!

Photoshop On The Go

Whilst being at home for a couple of days I still wanted to make sure that I did some work with the pressure of deadlines and the end of Uni becoming more intense. It's quite difficult getting on a train with a huge bag of art supplies so designing on Photoshop was all I could really do on the train and in the car on the way to see family.

By quickly changing colour ways, layout, line widths and scale I have created some florals designs for which I see as having an interior or stationary feel.

Céline | Fall 2013-14 | Campaign

I recently came across this ad campaign by Céline in which the background the models stood in front of really caught my eye. I love the geometric shapes, linear lines and bright colours to create a busy, but structured print.

Swarovski | Spring Summer | 2013 Campaign

Whilst searching through my magazines for some designer influences I can across an advert for the Swarovski Spring/Summer 2013 Campaign and could not take my eyes off it.

I was firstly attracted to the florals mixed with diamonds and how some of my drawings can translate in to something like this. But, the more I looked at it, the more I fell in love with the girls make up too.

French Florals | New Project

For the last project on Paris I did a lot of mood boards, apart from printing my fabric it is all I probably did. So, for this project I decided to keep doing them as I have begun to be really inspired by them and the fact that I can have them pinned around me always on show.

Florals has always been a huge influence for me ever since college and it was after looking in to one company called Voyage Maison that I decided I really wanted to return to doing them, despite them being everywhere at the moment.

First Brief Idea

I will continue to use Paris as a source for this project, with my linear lined drawings and the bright colours I did last semester. But I will take this forward by doing more digital prints that are busy and bright with the aim of trying to design for both fashion and interiors.

Inspiration | Florence Angelica Colson

Whilst searching for jobs, new design ideas and new ways of working I always come across designers that catch my eye and inspire me to be more like them and push my design boundaries.

I came across the beautiful hand drawn and digitally designed prints by Florence who studied at Leeds College of Art and showcased her work at New Designers last year. I love her bright bold colours and geometric and loose combination of over layering. I'm also inspired by how some prints are really busy and some are not yet still work together as a collection.
